Dr. CHRISTY ABRAHAM
Dr. CHRISTY ABRAHAM completed his MBBS from Govt. Medical College Thrissur and MD Psychiatry from Govt. Medical College Calicut. He has also done specialist training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology and Addiction medicine from NIMHANS, Bangalore. He is a fellow of IPS & IASP and an executive member of IMA. He is also a member of IASMP (International Association of Sexual Medicine), IPSSZ, IPSKSB, CTPS & KGMOA. He has published research papers, is a very good orator and gives lectures at seminars and conferences. His special interests include Mood Disorders, Adolescent & Sexual Problems and Critical Assessment of Research Articles.

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on the diagnosis, treatment & prevention of mental, emotional and behavioural disorders.
Psychiatric disorder is a medical problem, involving: Significant changes in thinking, emotion, and/or behaviour, and Distress and/or problems functioning in social, work, or family activities.
Multiple factors like – genetic, environmental & social, play a role in the causation of Psychiatric disorders. In Psychiatric disorders – inside the Brain – the normal neurochemical balance is altered. There will also be altered functional connectivity between different brain areas.
Mind is a function of the Brain. Brain is like the hardware of the computer & Mind the software. The Brain is the organ of the mind just as the lungs are the organs for respiration.
A psychiatrist is a doctor, who specializes in Psychiatry (MD) after completing MBBS. MBBS is a 5-year course & MD a 3-year course done in a medical college.
Psychologist is a person holding a BSc/MSc Psychology degree from any university. They are not educated in a medical college.
Psychiatrist (MBBS, MD) is a medical Doctor who is trained in both prescribing medicines as well as doing Psychotherapy/Counselling. A Psychologist (BSc/MSc) does only counselling. So it’s recommended to see a Psychiatrist, as only a doctor can see if the patient is actually suffering from a disorder of the mind or if its due to any organic disorders or physical diseases, which in turn leading to a disorder of the mind.
Psychiatric medicines are not addicting in nature.
Psychiatric medications have only very minimal side-effect risks when correctly prescribed & dosed.
The course of the medicine depends on the duration, severity & frequency of illness & the associated functional impairment caused by the illness.
